Somewhere on most people's phones is a small collection of documents that matter more than anything else on the device: a passport scan, a signed lease, an insurance policy, a medical result someone emailed as a PDF. These usually end up in the Downloads folder, exactly where they were saved, with zero protection beyond your phone's general lock screen.
Why the Downloads folder isn't good enough
Anything in your Downloads folder is visible to your Files app, any file manager, and any app you've granted storage permissions to. If your phone is ever unlocked around someone else — handed over to show a photo, borrowed briefly — those documents are just as accessible as everything else.
Find what's already exposed
Check your Downloads folder and Files app for scans, PDFs, and screenshots of anything sensitive — IDs, boarding passes, financial statements. It's usually more than people expect.
Move them into an encrypted vault
A document vault encrypts each file on your device and removes the original from shared storage, so it's no longer sitting in your regular Files app.
Delete leftover copies
Check chat apps and email for the same document — if you originally received it via WhatsApp or email, a copy may still be cached there even after you've moved the "main" copy into a vault.
What about password-protected PDFs?
A password on the PDF itself is better than nothing, but the file still sits in plain sight in your Files app, and the strength of that password protection varies a lot depending on what created the PDF in the first place. It also means remembering a separate password just for that file. Moving it into a vault instead gives it the same protection as the rest of your private files, under one PIN or biometric unlock.
Documents vs. other private files
Documents tend to be more sensitive on average than a random photo or video — they often contain your full name, ID numbers, or financial details in one place. If you're setting up a vault for the first time, it's worth prioritizing documents first, then expanding to photos and videos afterward.
